OUT OF THE OVEN AND INTO
THE FIRE
Passion rules Michael Holbergs' life like rain rules the Seattle
skyline. At first glance Holberg would appear anything but a passionate
artist of color and emotions. You may see him dashing around town in his
vintage Corvette and think he was a rugged outdoorsman instead of a
refined and disciplined artist dedicated to fiery colors and passionate
sculptures of glass.
Holberg's inspiration comes from the poetry he writes for each piece.
The poetry and glass blowing both originate from the fire that burns
inside of him. They are an interpretation of the examination and
curiosity about life and how it all blends together.
Holberg contemplated a few minutes before he said, "There is something
sobering when you look into the mirror and realize 45 years have
vanished. When you're fresh out of college you think you will have
plenty of time to pursue your dream, but the calendar kept turning, the
years went by and I was no closer to realizing my dream."
Like so many others, what began, as the need for an immediate income
after graduating college became a career. Holberg began working in a
bakery as a cake artist and eventually became manager of one of the
larger wholesale bakeries in the Pacific Northwest. Always an artist at
heart he continued to pursue many different types of art including
drawing, painting & stained glass.
Holberg said, "After 27 years of baking I jumped out of the oven and
into the fire. My passion for glass began in 1996 while watching glass
blowers in a Seattle studio. I was absorbed by their work and the
hypnotic glow of the molten glass. I turned to my wife and said, "I can
do that." She promptly responded, " Then do it." "Before I left the
studio I had signed up for my first set of classes. Since that first
class I have had the good fortune to work and learn from some of the
most famous glass artists in the world. I find great satisfaction in
working with my hands to create something that no one has ever seen.
